SummerARTS

Program Activity

SummerARTS offers group instruction and opportunities for creative self-expression in music, peforming and visual arts in a fun, downtown community setting. Our teachers are professional artist-educators.

To REGISTER, download and complete a printable registration form on www.cmcb.org and mail it with your tuition deposit to SummerARTS Registration, CMCB, 34 Warren Avenue, Boston MA 02116.

SummerARTS takes place in our beautiful air-conditioned, MBTA- and wheelchair-accessible facility in Boston's South End at the Community Music Center of Boston, 34 Warren Avenue.
60 children. First come, first served. Many families return year after year, so register soon!

DATES:
Weekdays, June 23 - July 18
(Note: SummerARTS will be closed Friday, July 4)
Gala Festival Performance Evening - Wednesday, July 16, 6:30 PM
 
HOURS: 9:00 a.m. - noon. Extended Day: Noon - 2:00 p.m.
 
AGES: YoungARTS ages 2-3; boys and girls, ages 4-10; Counselors-in-Training, ages 11-14. Camper-staff ratio: 4:1.

Program includes:

MUSIC
Faculty: Lucy Joan Sollogub, Elizabeth Steen, Liza Kitchell, Peter Malagodi, Suzanne Clark. Children will enjoy a daily class which includes singing, song-games and dances, fi ngerplays, rhythm instrument playing and pennywhistle, recorder, or dulcimer instruction.

VISUAL ART
Faculty: David Small. Children will draw, paint, make prints, weave, create paper and clay sculpture, make masks and jewelry and much more in our daily art classes.

CREATIVE DRAMATICS
Faculty: Trisha Gordon, Iael Kievsky. Children explore drama daily through improvisation, pantomime, and creating plays. Drama games, exercises and storytelling teach children the fundamentals of dramatics: awareness of the senses, emotions and imagination.

MOVEMENT AND DANCE
Faculty: Laura Osgood, Jennifer Keller, Ellen Philpott
Each morning children will participate in a class that will include creative movement and games, dances/dramatics, jazz, modern, hip hop and folk dance.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
- Our annual "unbirthday" party and City Cookout
- A performance by a professional troupe, where kids can meet the performers and learn about scenery,choreography and production.
- Cultural field trip in the performing arts.
- Other art activities (instrument making, juggling, line dance, and more!) not offered during the regular schedule. Children will also share their songs, dances,
skits and artwork for family and friends at our Festival Performance Evening.

YoungARTS
Faculty: Liza Kitchell. Children ages 2-3 years old with an adult partner may sample SummerARTS one morning per week. YoungArts activities include opening gathering, creative movement, music, snack and art. Fee includes a SummerARTS T-shirt. 4 Tuesdays:June 24, July 1, 8, 15. Time: 9:00-10:30 AM

SummerARTS PLUS
Families may register their child (age 7 or older) for four private/semi-private instrument lessons at a special SummerARTS rate. These four half-hour lessons will be scheduled in the afternoon.

Extended Day Program:Noon-2:00 PM
This recreational program includes a supervised lunch time (children bring their own bag lunch), walks to the park, stories, games, camp crafts, cooking and a talent show. Children in Extended Day may write and direct their own original play, creating their own props and scenery. This program allows the extra time to follow each child's special areas of interest. NOTE: no Extended Day on Friday, July 18.

SummerARTS Concurrent Instruction
CMCB is also offering SummerStrings, a four-week summer violin program for 4th - 7th graders which includes group lessons and ensemble instruction in addition to classes in rhythm, music theory and performance. SummerStrings 2008 will be held June 23-July 18, 2008 from 11 AM to 3 PM. Two-week sessions are an option. Contact William Fickes, Artistic Director at 617-482-7494 x23 or fickes@cmcb.org.

GUESTS
We welcome guests to share a morning at SummerARTS and to participate in all activities. Please register your guest at least one day in advance with the director. (Cost per guest per morning is $40).

TUITION
$755 per child includes all costs: 19 days of instruction, snacks, performances, field trips, instrument usage, materials, T-shirt and memory book. $525 for Counselors-in-Training.
