System-involved girls need your help!
This bill will require state agencies, (DCF, DYS and Juvenile Probation) to examine how they provide services to girls in their care and make changes, gender responsive changes that will foster more positive outcomes for girls.
The Committee is reporting bills out now. We need your help for a favorable report out of H3418. We are asking you to contact members of the Joint Committee on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities and register your support of H3418. If you would like to help this effort and your Representative or Senator serves on this Committee, please call them and register your support. If you do not have a Representative or Senator on the Committee, you could call one or both of the Committee Chairs. A list of the Committee members is below.
The Girls' Initiative
Initiated by the Hyams Foundation in January of 2003, the Girls' Initiative is a response to the problem of the growing number of girls entering the juvenile justice system. The long-term goal of the initiative is to promote positive outcomes for high risk and/or already system-involved girls and to reduce the rates of involvement and recidivism of girls in the juvenile justice system, particularly for girls of color. Currently the Girls' Initiative is focusing on the Youth Policy Initiative funded The Barr Foundation, The Boston Foundation and The Hyams Foundation, which will: Advocate for changes in policy/regulation in favor of a gender specific approach when working with girls.
