A position at IBA-Cacique

The Visual Arts Instructor/Resource Staff will be primarily responsible for working with a group of 10-15 young people between the ages of 13 and 19 to learn new visual arts techniques, create individual pieces, and participate in community art projects.

Hours: Seasonal

Position: IBA-Cacique Visual Arts Instructor

Contract Period: Tuesdays (July 8-August 14, 2008)

Hours: 10am - 12:30pm or 1:30 - 4pm

Group Size: 10-15 youth

Supervisor: Youth Program Manager with the support of the Art Program Coordinator

Organization Description: Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA), established in 1968, is a dynamic community building agency dedicated to increasing the social and economic power of individuals and families through education, economic development, technology and arts programming. The Cacique Youth Learning Center, a division of IBA, uses arts-based education as a medium for youth leadership and development. To support the social development of each participating young person, dance programming will be combined with workshops in which participants share their personal and cultural experiences through visual arts, music, technology education, health education, outdoor adventure, and theatre.

Position Description: The Visual Arts Instructor/Resource Staff will be primarily responsible for working with a group of 10-15 young people between the ages of 13 and 19 to learn new visual arts techniques, create individual pieces, and participate in community art projects. In addition, artwork created during these workshops will be reviewed and recommended for the Cacique Youth Art Exhibit in La Casa de la Cultura/ Center for Latino Arts in Villa Victoria.

Specific Responsibilities:

* Work with Cacique Youth Arts Coordinator and Youth Program Manager to develop a visual arts curriculum for July 8th-Aug. 14th
* Implement visual arts curriculum each Tues. from July 8th-Aug. 14th from 10am-12:30pm or 1:30-4pm.
* Motivate others and foster leadership development in youth.
* Assist in installing and taking down arts exhibit for the end of cycle celebration on Aug. 14th.
* Assist Cacique Youth Arts Coordinator, youth participants, and additional staff and collaborators during final performances
* Participate when possible in agency wide events and activities, especially those related to youth.
* Build healthy interactions and relationships between IBA staff and youth.

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Formal training in the visual arts
* Experience with a wide range of drawing/ painting techniques
* Experience with urban arts/ graffiti preferred
* Experience in designing collaborative pieces
* Familiarity with curriculum design or the development of educational programs for youth
* Familiarity with teaching visual arts
* Experience working with low-income, minority youth. Excellent written and oral communication skills
* Experience working with people of diverse racial, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
* Bilingual (English/Spanish) and bicultural or experience with more than one culture preferred
