The Urban Fusion Dance Instructor should have experience working with urban youth and have academic and performance experience in various genres including hip-hop, reggaeton, bachata, salsa, merengue, bomba, African, etc.

Hours: Part time

Position: IBA-Cacique Urban Fusion Dance Troupe Instructor-Contract: Fall 2008

Contract Period: September 15 – November 21, 2008 (Day of the week TBD)

Hours: 3:30-6pm

Group Size: 10-14 youth

Supervisor: Youth Program Manager and Program Art Coordinator

Organization Description:

Inquilinos Boricuas en Acción (IBA), established in 1968, is a dynamic community building agency dedicated to increasing the social and economic power of individuals and families through education, economic development, technology and arts programming. The Cacique Youth Learning Center, a division of IBA, uses arts-based education as a medium for youth leadership and development. To support the social development of each participating young person, dance programming will be combined with workshops in which participants share their personal and cultural experiences through visual arts, music, technology education, health education, outdoor adventure, and theatre.

Position Description:

The weekly Urban Fusion dance classes at the Cacique Youth Learning Center are designed to give teens a basic overview of different dance techniques from around the world.
    * Teens will become familiar with different dance styles such as hip-hop, African, and Latin, among others.
    * Teens will become proficient in proper stretching technique and callisthenic exercises.
    * Teens will be introduced to various dance styles and their cultural contexts. They will begin to understand where contemporary dance styles such as Hip-Hop/Reggaeton come from. They will learn to fuse these modern styles with African/Afro-Caribbean and Latin dances.
    * Teens will receive a brief overview of dance history. Students will learn to identify when and where different techniques and styles were developed.

Specific Responsibilities
    * Support the program coordinators and lead faculty member in the development of programming and provision of lessons;
    * Coach program participants in the development of fundamental skills;
    * Recommend instructional resources essential to learning;
    * Prepare students for recitals and other performances;
    * Keep classrooms and performance spaces organized;
    * Prepare course materials;
    * Produce a final event to be presented during our End of the Program Celebration, Thursday, November 20, 2008.
    * Meet with Program Manager and Coordinator to plan and implement a six week curriculum.
    * Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

The Urban Fusion Dance Instructor should have experience working with urban youth and have academic and performance experience in various genres including hip-hop, reggaeton, bachata, salsa, merengue, bomba, African, etc. Must be a self-starter who is willing to perform the groundwork necessary for the creation of new programming. Teaching background and bilingual English/Spanish a plus.
