Organization Description : Tenacity is a year round youth development organization that offers free tennis instruction and academic enrichment to over 2,500 Boston youth in the summer and intensive after-school programs that combine tennis instruction/competition and academic support with a focus on life-skills.
Since 1999, Tenacity has been helping fill the great need in the city of Boston for after-school and summer programs. Currently, through their 5-year Rallying to Serve Initiative, Tenacity is reaching out to elementary kids with in-school programs, doubling the number of middle schoolers in their After-School Excellence Program, creating a high school tennis league long absent from Boston Public Schools, and enrolling thousands of kids of all ages in their Summer Tennis and Reading Program. True to Tenacity's core beliefs, each of these programs integrates athletic, academic, and life skills development.

Program Goals:
*To improve the scholastic, character and physical development of urban youth by combining tennis instruction/competition and academic support, with a focus on life-skills.
*To build sound values by letting children experience the link between success on the court and commitment to a disciplined training schedule.
*To enhance academic performance by enabling youngsters to see the connections between excelling on the court an in the classroom.
*To provide the opportunity for Boston's youth to pursue tennis as a life long activity during their high school, college and business career. Some may actually pursue a competitive tournament tennis career.

Position Description :

1) Work as a team with the Academic Coordinator to manage all aspects of the After-School Excellence Program (ASEP) at a particular site of approximately 35 students. This includes:
a) Selecting/ recruiting and registering students for the program
b) Meeting with students and families at least twice a year to discuss program guidelines and commitment
c) Helping to arrange for transportation of children from school to the program site and then home
d) Assisting in the design and implementation of a program evaluation process involving students, parents, and school-day personnel
e) Ensuring that the academic and tennis activities are supporting each other, especially in the area of life skills development

2) Run the tennis sessions at a particular site. This includes:
a) Implementing Tenacity’s tennis and fitness curriculum
i) Facilitate whole group activities
ii) Coordinate and manage separate courts of students run by volunteer and part-time tennis staff
b) Managing behavior and providing one-on-one support to students experiencing behavioral, social, or academic difficulties

4) Work throughout the summer as a Summer Site Director, developing curriculum, or on other projects

5) Assist with developing and implementing strategic growth objectives, such as:
a) adding new teams of students and staff within existing schools
b) adding new schools

6) As a staff team member of a dynamic, growing organization, work on a variety of projects (fundraising, administrative, program support, etc. etc…) as requested by the Program Director and President

Key Relationships:
• Work in close partnership with Academic Coordinator
• Supervise part-time staff
• Along with other Tenacity staff, liaison to schools, including teachers and others
• Coordinator of up to several dozen volunteers
• In partnership with other Tenacity staff members, liaison to parents and students
• Report to School Year Program Director

 
Position Requirements : The ideal candidate will be/have:
• Trustworthy, high energy, high integrity, flexible, organized
• Willingness and availability to work in an intense non-profit environment and put in long hours as the work demands
• Masters in Education or related field preferred
• 2 to 5 years of tennis teaching and/or program management experience, preferably in a middle school or a start-up, fast-growth organization serving urban, multi-cultural constituents
• Counseling experience and/or course work a plus
• Able to work with others in a collaborative team environment
• A passion for children, this program, and the Boston community
• Proficiency in verbal and written communication, Microsoft Word, Excel
• Certification by USPTA and/or USPTR or significant tennis teaching experience preferred
