A position at The New England Aquarium

The job description is flexible about college experience. The most important criteria are a dedication to local community groups and the desire, and some experience working with urban youth.

JOB SUMMARY:
The coordinator is responsible for sharing the New England Aquarium with Boston-area residents who would typically be unable to participate in our programs or visit our exhibits due to financial or other barriers. S/he coordinates outreach programs for after school and community groups, and maintains communication with key contacts at more than 100 community organizations throughout greater Boston. S/he also trains and serves as an exemplary role model for Teen Interns—high school students from Boston and Cambridge, MA. The successful coordinator will be a strategic thinker who advocates for effective programs to engage underserved Bostonians.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Implements all aspects of outreach programs, including reviewing applications, scheduling programs, loading materials into a vehicle and presenting programs.

Maintains communication and builds positive relationships with leaders of community-based organizations, including after-school program providers.

Collaborates with Aquarium colleagues including leaders of Teen Programs and School Outreach programs to coordinate mutual support and smooth operations for all programs.

Supervises Teen Interns, College Interns, and some part-time staff.

Advocates for the population of people we serve and wish to serve through Community Programs within the New England Aquarium.

Develops better ways to serve underserved populations of the greater Boston area using NEAq educational programs and services.

Performs other position-related duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION:
This position requires a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience plus two years of professional experience demonstrating skills that are important to this role.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Valid driver’s license required.

Positive experiences working with community based after-school organizations.

Positive experience supervising, mentoring and building rapport with teens.

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Fluency in at least one language in addition to English is desirable.
