Details

Description:

The Trauma Center at JRI is proud to announce a ground-breaking conference hosted by two leaders in the field of trauma treatment: Dr. Bessel van der Kolk and Dr. Janina Fisher. This training event will explore biological and psychological bases of trauma and introduce innovations in trauma treatment.

Day One. Frontiers of Trauma Treatment: The Dialogue Between Mind and Brain. Dr. van der Kolk will discuss foundations for understanding the impact of acute and chronic traumatic stress exposures on children and adults and review the complexity of adaptation to trauma. This workshop will increase participants' awareness of the various manifestations of exposure to complex trauma and build an understanding of the biological, physiological, and neurological impact of trauma exposure and the extended trauma response.

Day Two. Frontiers of Trauma Treatment: Working with the Somatic Legacy of Trauma. This workshop will focus on trauma and the body, providing a theoretical framework for the autonomic dysregulation that accompanies trauma exposure. Participants will learn the principles underlying the use of specific stabilization techniques for complexly traumatized individuals. Dr. Fisher will introduce a range of physiological and body-based strategies for working with trauma-related symptoms, including Sensori-motor Psychotherapy. Participants will be provided with case material that illustrates intervention with clients who have experienced autonomic dysregulation.

This conference is appropriate for individuals at all levels of training.

Continuing Education credits available.

About the Presenters:

Bessel van der Kolk, M.D., Medical Director and founder of The Trauma Center, has been active as a clinician, researcher and teacher in the area of posttraumatic stress and related phenomena since the 1970s. His work integrates developmental, biological, psychodynamic and interpersonal aspects of the impact of trauma and its treatment. His book Psychological Trauma was the first integrative text on the subject, painting the far ranging impact of trauma on the entire person and the range of therapeutic issues which need to be addressed for recovery. Dr. van der Kolk has taught at universities and hospitals across the United States and around the world, and has published extensively on the impact of trauma on development. He was co-principal investigator of the DSM-IV Field Trials for PTSD, past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, a founding member of the Steering Committee of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, and is currently working with colleagues to bring a Developmental Trauma Disorder diagnosis to the DSM-V.

Janina Fisher, Ph.D. is a licensed Clinical Psychologist and Instructor at the Trauma Center, an outpatient clinic and research center founded by Bessel van der Kolk. Known for her expertise as both a clinician and consultant, she is also past president of the New England Society for the Treatment of Trauma and Dissociation, an EMDR International Association Credit Provider, a faculty member of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute, and a former Instructor, Harvard Medical School. Dr. Fisher lectures and teaches nationally and internationally on topics related to the integration of the neurobiological research and newer trauma treatment paradigms into traditional therapeutic modalities.
